So, you have all maybe noticed I have been quiet of late, this is due to a change of scenery on my part. This is because I am now renting a flat in the basement of a converted town house. I was previously in a single room in a HMO (House of multiple occupants) Being the only person with any sort of life knowledge and handimanablilty I was doing ridic amounts of odd jobs, as well as invariably being the one to vent my fury on the letting agents when the shit hit the fan. This led to me effectively having 3 jobs + playing an obscene amount of poker. (Job 1) My actual job @ with Cooperative Banking Group, Job 2 training my ass off, Job 3 playing house Daddy to a bunch of invalids.
Yea sure I was/am friends with all of my ex-housemates, they are all lovely people, being the house genius can get tiresome though.
So anyway, my new pad is BALLER!!!! I have my poker office set up, and am finding it much easier to grind without constant distractions.
So played a bit of breakeven PLO today, and as promised am back to playing some NLHE. I actually ran to EV today, which has never happened....ever. Ok i exaggerate, but not for a long time. Even then it was only because I got it in OTT and OTR everytime with the nuts :P
Kind of interesting hand came up today with JJ ofc, as it happened I flopped the toppest of sets and had some guy with K high jam for me, however it was an interesting spot that I was 60/40 with 3 betting from the BB.
My questions here are: -
1) What % of the time are you 3 betting here.
2) What size is your 3b
3) Given that you flat pre are you looking to donk, X/R the flop or C/C given stack sizes and ability to be playing for stacks OTR.
Opener is a 14/11/3.7 ABC reg cbets 82% flatter on BTN I have no reads on. Original limper is a fish 64/11/0 over 95 hands. I figure a 3b from me will most likely get called by fish, therefore MP2 will most likely come along with any PP and SCs which is gonna make my hand really hard to play OOP.
Pre I guess my other options are boomtime 3b. However this is losing out on a ton of value and tbh if MP2 4bets I am in a super sick spot.

So anyways, as it happens, it worked out all good. However I am not 100% sure on my pre flop play.
Ok you have fallen for a common trap with HM users. Obv these stats are avg's so the pfr in this spot is not right in all probability. What is important is the guys open on button (HM popup) (obv most ppl are opening tighter EP and loosen their ranges the later in pos they are).
ReplyDelete2nd factor is how he is responding to 3 bets in button vs blind scenarios (HM popup).
3rd factor how he sees your perceived image- if your 3betting him alot from the blinds he may adapt to 4bet you lighter with say 68 suited.
Anyways if we take this average of 14%pfr as his button opening range and assign a top heavy range (this is obv giving him to much credit). He is opening 77+ and A9+: obv you are well ahead of his range.
If we decide to see a flop and just call:
AA,KK,QQ- 16 combos- we have 20% equity
Ak,AQ, KQ- 48 combos- we are flipping- 55% equity
JJ- 1 combo- we chop
77-1010: 24 combos we crush- 80%
Aj-A9: 144 combos- we crush- 75%
Our hand JJ is to big to be not 3 betting- think about it- if we are not 3betting JJ in this scenario: what are we 3betting??? our 3 bet range is weighted towards AA/KK and makes you very easy to play against.
If you would 3 bet xx here vs button opener- you remove the middle of you range from your blind vs button 3bets- obv polarization. I think the most +ev range in this spot is to have a merged range- polarizing OOP is not very gd IMO. We also have reverse implied odds say if it comes one over card as we have under repped our hand and have to call at least one street (check folding is so bad lets not think about it).
By 3 betting you get him to define his range (if he is as abc as you say he is). His 4bet stat on the button vs blinds is very important here- if he is 4 betting 3.5% or greater here we can get it in pre with a positive expectation.
If he flats we define his range- most abc guys don't like playing 3bet pots and will 4bet AA/KK and flat alot with QQ.
Say he has QQ and it comes A/K high our cbet will win alot.
If we cbet the flop and he calls it is very easy to play against this player.
Anyways- not 3betting in this scenario is really bad!!!! range polarization in this spot is going to be exploited when you play higher- you are losing out on value alot/ letting ppl outdraw you with hands like A-10/ you have under repped you hand so will suffer from reverse implied odds on many one over card board textures: esp cause your OOP. You probs will get away with flatting here at 10nl as most players aren't very gd- not the most +ev play though.
The question is do you want to be a scavenger feeding off the weak just to survive or be an apex predator????
